Search "what size AC do I need" and you will find calculators that ask for two or three things:

  • Square footage
  • Climate zone
  • Maybe ceiling height

Then they return a tonnage.

That is useful for a rough estimate.

It is not the same thing as Manual J.

What a square-foot calculator is doing

A simplified calculator usually starts with an assumed BTU-per-square-foot relationship and adjusts it with a few broad factors.

That makes it fast.

It also means the calculator is assuming a lot about the building.

It may implicitly assume:
